Producer and DJ KaizzaB is back with his 2018 album Fears & Downward Spirals after the release of 3 EPs and numerous singles, having been played on BBC Introducing Humberside and getting involved in BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend which visited Hull in 2017. Kieran Bernes-Jones, the man behind the alias, has been creating music under this name since 2014. Moving into his fifth year, we’re seeing elements of drum & bass and dubstep move into his established electronic dance music style. Here is a producer who’s not afraid of changing it up, and this album really shows it.
Fears & Downward Spirals, the 13-track album, is bigger than any project we’ve seen KaizzaB release before. The album introduces us to the venture from his previous style with Late Night featuring Hull based hip hop artist Phelix. The third track on the album, The Room, explores D&B further than he has before, working alongside producer KiNK. It’s an intense album, heavy on drums and synths and bass, but what came as a surprise to me is that it explores vocals more than I expected, including those of Hull local singer-songwriter, Katrina Rae. The track Crows, in the middle of the album acts as an interlude, kind of a calming aural cleanser, if you will, before the next group of tracks play on. The music is sinister, almost, as a lot of music of a similar style would be, but the last track Hope, true to the title, feels happier, like a resolution of the whole album.
The album is a big, big piece of work, and you can hear the time that’s gone into creating it. It’s definitely worthy of the album party that is being held on the 19th March at The New Adelphi Club, in the HU5 area of Hull. The event will see performances from Danc and Crystal Clear alongside the main event of the evening, KaizzaB himself. Tickets are just £4 on the door and just £2 for students, so get yourself down for a night of good tunes whilst supporting the charity that the gig is in aid of - Mind. Fears & Downward Spirals is well worth a listen, so catch it on Spotify and grab a copy for yourself on his Music Glue site.
