Nottingham-born DJ and producer, Tom Walton has been producing house music since he was 14. Now based in Hull, Walton has been constantly making music and playing gigs at Asylum and numerous events at The New Adelphi Club, a local hub for new music. New Year, Same Old Me was released back on the 11th January, earlier this year. The five-track EP explores all sorts of house music - deep house, piano house, funky/soul and disco. The tracks were written, recorded and produced in Walton's own home-built studio using live instrumentation in amongst electronic synthesis. The variation between instrumental and the use of vocal samples is really nicely balanced throughout the EP. In fact, all tracks apart from Keen on Movin’, which features Walton's lyrics and own voice, use vocal samples.
A personal favourite of mine on the album is Got me on your mind. It's catchy and ducks in and out of the title sample in the right places, keeping the momentum up throughout the track. It’s not hard to imagine all of these tracks being well received in a nightclub and it’s good to hear more house music coming onto the scene in Hull.
You can find New Year, Same Old Me on Spotify along with his earlier releases and take a look at his Soundcloud to see his other mixes. Keeping up with new music, Tom dropped two tracks on Soundcloud earlier this week and his single Ring the Alarm is due to be released on digital platforms this Friday, 15th March with promises of more music to come in the near future.
