Grace Christiansen. Changes

Frequenter of Beverley and Hull music venues and never seen without a cup of tea, Grace Christiansen has just released her new EP, Changes.

Grace writes the kind of music that gets stuck in your head and you have no idea how it got there. It’s not pop, it’s not folk, it’s some glorious kind of in-between. Her guitar playing is beautiful and voice effortless. It’s hard to know how an acoustic act will decide which way to take their recordings, especially when the songs sound as if they were written for vocals and acoustic guitar - raw, just like the lyrics in Grace’s songs.

The EP consists of three songs - Crazy for you, Running back to you and Can’t help myself. The latter is a live version recorded at Kardomah94 in Hull and there are live versions of the first two that complement the studio tracks. I have to say, I didn’t expect to hear an electric guitar in any of these tracks, but the use of one in Crazy for you creates a really mellow, melancholic atmosphere than the song exudes without it, showing inspiration from the likes of John Mayer and an air of Lucy Rose. These are songs are ear worms, the liquid melodies weaving around the relatable lyrics of love and cordial longing. I’m really glad that Grace explored the instrumentation and rhythm in the recorded versions of her songs. Of course her songs are beautifully raw and emotional acoustically, but this EP shows the breadth of her creativity and direction as a musician.

If ever the chance arises that you can see Grace perform live, you can be assured it will be a beguiling and heartening gig as you get lost in the personal nature of the music. You can find her playing gigs around and about Hull amid her busy schedule of making people’s wedding days that little bit brighter. Changes is on Spotify and Apple Music and you can check her website for future news and events. I look forward to hearing more from Grace and it would be exciting to see a full album on the cards in the foreseeable future.
