The Avenues. Haven’t got a prayer.

The Avenues are back, noisier and angrier, with their second single Haven’t got a prayer, out for release this Friday, 7th June. Boredom was a single that held promise of good things for this band and Haven’t got a prayer proves that wasn’t just a one off. Showing major influences from the mid-2000s indie movement, The Avenues definitely seem to know their sound. Once again, the production is clean, favouring distortion in the vocals and guitar in parts just to reinforce the millennial angst and hopelessness that the lyrics dictate.

I keep on growing older,

But I’m still not very wise

Ah, the struggle of being a twenty-something in a very confusing world. You’re not alone there boys. I’m fairy sure most of us have wondered when exactly it is that the sensible part of being an adult will become ingrained in our day-to-day lives. Just like Boredom, the track and vocals are brilliantly Northern and the lyrics are honest straight to the point.

I’m too skint to live,

I’m too alive to care,

I think that God keeps telling me I haven’t got a prayer

Nail on the head. Pretty relevant lyrics that will resonate with a majority of their audience. It’s memorable and easy to sing along to and the end of the song gives you the chance to join in with this carefree, animated and irked protest that embodies the disorientation and agitation of a generation in their prime. The lyrics and the vocals, a major player in any track, aren't the be all and end all in this song, however. I've already given props to the production, but what's a good production without a good set of musicians? The band are tight. They give off the impression that they've been around much longer than they've actually been together and if they keep making music like this the future looks hopeful for the group.

The summer looks good for The Avenues, set to play The Sesh at The Polar Bear on the 14th August and Café Indie in Scunthorpe on the 8th June, to name just two. Next Thursday, 6th June, however, the band are heading down to The New Adelphi Club to host a launch party for Haven’t got a prayer. With support from Vialetters and Yasmin Coe, tickets are only £3 OTD, or you can get in touch with the band through Facebook to get cheaper guest list tickets. The New Adelphi Club is one of the oldest and most renowned pop music venues in the city and The Avenues are no less a perfect fit to put on a show worthy of their reputation.

Haven’t got a prayer is out for release on Friday and I'm in hopes that there will be much more music coming our way from The Avenues in the near future.
