The Avenues. Boredom.

Hull-based indie-rock band, The Avenues, released their first single Boredom earlier this morning. Pretty new on the scene, they’ve already played venues such as The New Adelphi Club, and I think there are great things ahead for this group.

The clean guitar intro leads into heavy drums straight away before cutting back to a steady tempo for the verse. The drums again build up in a pre-chorus driving towards to a strong and catchy pop-punk inspired chorus hosting the mantra ‘there’s nothing left to break me, nothing’s gonna break me now’. It’s memorable and lends itself to the indie audience who love a good self-empowering line to sing back to the band. The balance of lyrics in this song is really clever. They’ve managed to get the catchy chorus whilst keeping the verses pretty original and though-provoking.

‘won’t you carefully chew on those words, before you spit them in my face?’

‘look around at all the sunken eyes that are lacking in self esteem’

It’s pretty cleverly written. The vocals are undoubtedly and wonderfully northern, only complimenting the poetic nature of the lyrics. It’s a distinctive voice, which I think can only be a good thing. The recording sounds clean and professional and this performance shows that these boys are a talented and accomplished group of musicians. If this is just their first single, I look forward to what else The Avenues have to offer us indie-rock fans, because I think there is so much more to come!

If you’re around in Hull tomorrow (2nd March), you can pop down to Off The Road - Live Lounge on Princes Avenue to see Tom, Ollie, Joe and Adam perform at the launch of this single. Check out Boredom on Spotify and I’m sure it’ll be circling your head soon. I’d keep an eye out for this one.
