HULL MUSIC VENUES
The best places to see and play music in and around the city
By Connie Ward-Allen
Part 1
Vintage bar, Silver Street
Vintage bar sits in Hull's old town, tucked away down the cobbled Silver Street. The bar is unusual and quaint, local art donning the walls which is available for purchase. Behind the bar is a friendly, chatty team pouring your ale or a large G&T that you can drink whilst enjoying the delicious snacks at the weekend, my choices being the artisanal sausage rolls and scotch eggs. Vintage kicks the weekend off with live music on a Friday night and ‘Sweet Sundays’, a Sunday afternoon of acoustic music, helping you wind down and make the most of the remainder of the weekend. I have performed at Vintage bar on a Sunday multiple times, and it’s one of my favourites for the feel-good atmosphere and the range of musicians that come to play.

Jaz Bar, Lowgate
Jaz Bar, just down the road from Vintage, is a bank-turned-bar and the grand high ceilings make a great space for eating, drinking and dancing. Often bustling on a Saturday night, Jaz is a prime drinking spot, but offers a food menu for lunch or earlier in the evening. The afternoon leading into Saturday night sees a music event hosted at Jaz, showing off the best local talent from the city and the areas surrounding. On Wednesday nights you can find a similar, more relaxed, event and on Thursdays, once again, Hull’s best musicians come to play.
St. John's Hotel, Queen's Road
Grade II listed St. John’s Hotel, down Queen’s Road that joins Newland, Princes and Beverly Road is another hidden gem that hosts a live music night on a Tuesday. Every week for ‘Tuesday’s at the Tap’ they have a featured act and you can sign up to perform at the open mic that takes place straight afterwards, and they might even ask you to come back for the featured slot! St. John’s is a quaint traditional pub with a separate room that hosts the music which often fills up quickly, so get there early if you want a seat! The resident golden lab is always pattering about the rooms, keen to make as many friends as possible and if you decide to play at the open mic, you get a free drink to enjoy while you watch the others. You never know what you’ll get with this open mic, but it’s always a respectful environment and people seem to come to actually enjoy the music - establishments that are like this are unfortunately few and far between now!
